BeachSaver Function
The BeachSaverTM is a product made by Breakwaters International Inc. located in Flemington, New Jersey.  This product has three basic functions.  The first is to reduce the wave height of the incoming waves on the shore.  This in turn will decrease the energy that is hitting the shoreline and also decrease the sediment movement. According to the company, the BeachSaverTM product has shown to reduce wave height from 20-30 percent.  The second function is to contain the sediment nearshore and stop the movement to the deep water.  The sand can therefore settle back into the beach area.  The third function is to increase the amount of underwater structure in the Keys and restore some of the coral reef that has been degrading over the last three decades.

The basic design is 10 ft wide, 16 ft long, and 6 ft high.  The construction of this includes a steel reinforced concrete mixture with a compound called Microsilica Force 10,000 (a product from W.R. Grace Construction Products).  The characteristics include an impact strength that is ten times that of concrete and a compression strength that is twice that of concrete.  It also is twenty times more resistant to the saltwater than standard concrete materials which increase its durability and longevity in the coastal areas of the Florida Keys.

BeachSaver section
The basic design consists of different sections that weigh 21 tons each (4,200 pounds).  This weight and low center of gravity provides the structure with a gravitational stability that it needs to resist movement during storm periods with high energy wave movement.  Jagged edges on the bottom also provide friction on the surface to reduce the movement of the structure. The stability was tested at the University of Delaware.  There the wave tank reached unrealistic conditions before the design overturned.   Also, the stability is increased with the addition of several sections in series attached to one another.
